An introduction to Tanzanian nature reserves

Tanzania has 12 national parks, habitats of some of the most diversified faunas in Africa. Landscapes are richly varied, ranging from the beaches of the Zanzibar coast to the heights of Mount Kilimanjaro and the impressive Ngorongoro crater.

Arusha National Park is within a short distance of the town of Arusha and its airport. It is divided into three zones : Mount Meru, Momela lakes and the marshes of Ngurdoto crater.

Gombe Stream National Park, the primeval forest sanctuary for chimpanzees, is known worldwide from the studies of the famous scientist Jane Goodall.

Katavi National Park includes the extensive marshy plains around Katavi and Chala lakes as well as the Katuma river. Crocodiles and hippos feel really at home in these parts.

Mount Kilimanjaro National Park is named after its main feature, Africa’s summit, which reaches 5,895 m at its highest point.

 

Mahale Mountains National Park, one of the last places of refuge for chimpanzees, is a vast forest sheltered by a mountain ridge.

Manyara Lake National Park harbours hot water springs and a very diversified fauna.

Mikumi National Park is the territory of lions and elephants who benefit from flood plains.

Ruaha National Park is situated around the waterfalls of the Ruaha river. This park is known for its packs of wild dogs.

 
Guerrier Masai

Rubondo Island National Park is surrounded by lake Victoria. Fisher eagles feed here on enormous fish, such as tilapias and Nile perch.

Serengeti National Park is probably one of the best known in Africa. It is the scene of the impressive gnu migration.

Tarangire National Park and Udzungwa Mountains National Park also contribute to the preservation of species by allowing them to breed in complete safety.
